Fantasy Literature 1

Title: The Lightning Thief (Book One in the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series)
Author: Rick Riordan
Publisher: Disney Hyperion
Copyright: 2005
Recommended Grade Level: 6th through 9th

Percy Jackson, plague to nearly all boarding schools in the northeast region of the country, has discovered that he is a demigod. Yes, you read that correctly. Percy’s biological father is an Olympic god. But not just any god, Percy's father is one of the big three. In this fantasy world, the children of the gods are being hunted down and killed by monsters. With the help of his friends, Grover and Annabeth, Percy must search for a missing Olympian artifact and stay alive long enough to discover the truth of his parentage.

I had heard about this series several times from various friends, but it was not until the previews for the upcoming movie version began to roll did I actually pick up a copy. I really enjoyed the first book and have already read the second book. It is not as good as the Harry Potter series, but it is an exciting little read.

This would be a great companion novel to use during a Greek/Roman mythology unit. Riordan really knows the mythology behind all of the gods and he has perfectly captured their personalities. I think boys would like this series as well. Riordan uses a lot of action sequences and sarcastic humor.
